How Do You Qualify For The NDA?

To qualify, you must pass a written NDA exam. The exam is divided into two main sections. The first section consists of a Mathematics paper of 300 marks and a General Ability (GA) paper of 600. In the first section, candidates are tested on their ability to understand and apply mathematical concepts, reasoning skills and problem-solving techniques to solve problems related to the above subjects. The second part of the NDA exam consists of a General Knowledge (GT) paper that tests your knowledge in various fields such as English, Science, Geography, and History, among other subjects.

Qualifications for NDA

The NDA accepts candidates from all walks of life; however, it does not accept candidates who have had previous military experience or have served in other armed forces. To join the NDA, you must meet the criteria highlighted below.


To be eligible to join NDA, you need to have a nationality of an Indian citizen, Nepali or Tibetan refugee to settle in India. People of Indian origin who migrated to East African countries, Pakistan or Sri Lanka are eligible to join NDA.

Educational Qualification

Students are admitted into the NDA on merit after completing their Class 12 or equivalent examination from an Indian board recognized by the Central Government. Candidates should have passed either Plus Two or Class 12 examinations with at least one subject in Mathematics, Science, English and a subject in Hindi/Community language or Sanskrit/Punjabi/Sanskrit & Modern Indian Languages. Candidates fulfilling these eligibility criteria will be considered for admission to NDA.


The minimum age for admission is 16 to 19 years old. However, there will there is an exception in the age limit for admission for those who qualify under other criteria such as educational qualification and mental aptitude test scores.

Martial Status

To be eligible to join NDA, you must be unmarried and have not been married. You can also enlist in the National Defense Academy if you are divorced or widowed but your spouse or family cannot accompany you during training.

Physically and Mentally Fit

Be physically fit for military service. Physical fitness is defined as the ability to perform the physical demands of military service without undue risk to health or life. The Physical Fitness Test (PFT) is conducted for all male and female candidates.
